Local Favourites
One of the most characteristic dishes in Mallorcan cuisine is the Sopes Mallorquines a hearty soup born of fine slices of bread in a hot vegetable and meat broth.

From the pig comes a wide variety of delicious charcuterie among which stands out the sobrassada, the butifarrons, the llonganissa and the camaiot.

If pastries are your thing, you should definitely take the opportunity to try the ensaimada, a flat spiral-shaped bun with a sugar topping. At transit points off the island, you will notice a lot of Mallorcans carrying hexagonal pizza shaped boxes containing ensaimadas back to their friends and family on the mainland. Ensaimada has become so closely linked to Mallorca to the point where its become common to ask, "I'm going to Mallorca. Want some ensaimadas?"

Another local favourite in these parts is tumbet, a dish comprised of potatoes, peppers, aubergines and tomato. Also popular is pa'amb oli -- unsalted bread with olive oil. Variations of pa'amb oli have sprouted up over the years, and it is common to see pa'amb oli served with garlic, tomato, cheese and eggplant toppings.

Palma is also becoming known for its chic boutique hotels. One of the best is the Hotel Tres, half 16-th century palazzo, half modern build, the two sides separated by a courtyard that's sheltered by a towering 100-year-old palm tree. The roof terrace, with its 360-degree views, is an ideal spot to see the sun go down behind the mountains and watch the boats in the harbour.
