Soller sits in a valley surrounded by orange groves near the northwest coast of Mallorca, earning it the nick name, ‘Valle de los Naranjos' or Valley of the Oranges. The present day economy in Soller is based mainly on tourism, complementary to an agriculture economy consisting of massive orchards of citrus and olive trees, which has, in recent years, suffered from low prices.
Soller's main claim to fame would be the vintage mahogany train that runs between Palma de Mallorca and Soller, ferrying over a million passengers a year through Mallorca's lush countryside and quaint hillside towns. Within Soller, as far as museums and attractions go, it's a bit thin. However Soller is scenic with the mountains in the background and ample cafes, bars and restaurants in the centre. Soller has a fine selection of pastry shops and tapas bar for the weary traveler, many surrounding the Placa Constitucio, its lively and bustling main square. Heavily shaded by mature trees and lined with cosy cafes, it is the ideal spot to people watch. The town proper of Soller is some 3 km inland, from the Puerto de Soller, in a large, bowl-shaped valley that also includes the village of Fornalutx and the hamlet of Biniaraix, ideal destinations for those wishing to experience the traditional Majorcan way of life. The combined population of Soller is around 13,000. A tramway, locally known as the ‘Orange Express', links Soller to Puerto de Soller. The Orange Express got its name because it travels from Soller through orange groves to terminate at its harbour, Puerto de Soller. The orange groves surrounding Soller have earned it its nickname, ‘Valle de los Naranjos' or Valley of the Oranges. For anyone in search of an ideal base for exploring both the Serra De Tramuntana mountains or Mallorca's rugged West Coast, Soller and the Puerto de Soller are a good choice. Ca'n Det Olive Press With Soller being well renown for its Olive production, a visit to a traditional olive processing factory here in Soller is a truly unique learning experience you would not find anywhere else on Mallorca. Ca'n Det is one of the few fincas around Soller still dedicated both to the growing of olives as well as the extraction of olive oil. The olive oil press at Ca'n Det is one of the few remaining mills on Mallorca to employ the use of traditional oil pressing methods using millstones, wicker mats and hydraulic presses. Ca'n Det's Olive press is open to those who would like to visit it or purchase some of its olive oil. Pre-booking your visit is recommended. Explotacions agricoles Can Det S.L. The festival lasts for a week and features public folk performances and cultural interchange sessions where the public has an opportunity to learn about each others culture. |
Soller's Old Town Within Soller, you will find ample cosy cafes, bars, bakeries and dinettes in the town centre. If you catch the first train to Soller in the morning, you will be treated to the smell of freshly baked bread upon arrival. |
