Tucked away on the northern-most tip of Mallorca, Pollensa is a small town that combines the charm of the mediterranean with the open, worldly atmosphere of a thriving port. The fairly large international community that resides here, coupled with the multinational tourist trade, gives Pollensa a very cosmopolitan character. Despite baing a hive of activity, in the heart of the old town, you will find quiet spots, untouched by tourism.
At the center of Pollensa, you will find El Calvario, a flight of 365 steps that lead to Puig de Santa María, an ancient hermitage. Each step represents a day of the year. Flanking the long flight of steps, petite boutique shops selling local handicrafts and clothing co-exists alongside hillside homes. Lush green potted plants accent the Calvario steps making this part of town one of the most postcard perfect spots in Pollensa.
The landscape around Pollensa is really diverse; steep mountains meet lonely shores with turquoise water and the green of pine trees contrasts with the craggy limestone cliffs.
On Good Friday, a dramatic re-enactment of the stations of the cross takes place on the steps of Calvario. A crucifixion is staged on the crest of the hill, after which a torchlit parade featuring a cast of cloaked and masked characters moves through town to the somber beat of a drum.
