Tucked into the furthest most corner of northeast Mallorca, Cala Ratjada is a lively marina town with animated cosmopolitan bars and outdoor seafood restaurants. Literally translated to mean ‘The Bay of Rays', Cala Ratjada started out as a sleepy fishing hamlet on the dramatic jagged Mallorcan coastline of Capdera. Today, instead of being a safe harbor for rustic fishing boats, it is home to expensive private yachts.
There are many activities to enjoy in and around Cala Ratjada. The promenade by the marina is ideal for leisurely walks and souvenir shopping. For those who have picked Mallorca for its warm Mediterranean sun and sea, the beaches and sandy coves around Cala Ratjada, having won the European Union Blue Flag award for cleanliness and water quality, are some of the best in the world.
If you have interests in ecology and the environment, it will be well worth your effort to venture to two breathtaking neighbouring towns, Cala Mesquida and Cala Agulla. There is a protected bird sanctuary in this area and it is here that you will find one of the few spots on Mallorca with pine forests overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
On a clear day, it is possible to see Ciutadella, a city on the neighboring island of Menorca. Anyone wishing to travel to Menorca may do so via hydrofoil which runs daily from Cala Ratjada.
In the evening, Cala Ratjada comes alive with lively chatter as restaurants and bars start to brim with patrons. Cala Ratjada's nightlife tends to spill out onto the sidewalk promenade. During a full moon, the silver sheen casts onto the Mediterranean turns this marina town in the Balearics into a surreal night to remember.
