La Seu Palma Cathedral

Without a doubt Mallorca's most iconic building, La Seu Palma Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral built on the site of an existing Arab mosque. Majestically perched above the ancient city walls, and lined with palm trees on the crest of a hill, La Seu commands a stunning view over Palma Bay and the old quarter of Palma de Mallorca. In the evening, the cathedral's golden sandstone exterior, bathed with the warm glow of a setting Mediterranean sun, is a sight to behold.

La Seu was built in a French Gothic style over a 300 hundred year period between the 14th and 17th Century.  Measuring 121 metres long and 55 metres wide, La Seu Palma Cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1601, though it has subsequently undergone many changes, the last of which was directed by the architect Antoni Gaudí between 1904 and 1914. One of Gaudi's contributions to La Seu Palma Cathedral is a wrought-iron baldachin (canopy) over the main altar.

La Seu Cathedral is also close to Almudaina Palace which is also well worth a visit.
