Just west of the quaint village of Esporles, is one of the best excursion destinations in Mallorca. Set against a backdrop of pine clad Tramuntana mountains , La Granja is a 10th century country house sitting on a beautiful 5 acre estate.
A visit to the La Granja mansion includes a tour of its different halls, bedrooms, dining rooms, cellars, kitchens and its dungeon with a torture chamber. Twice a week on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, women in traditional costumes perform traditional folk dances and give demonstrations of lacemaking, embroidery and spinning. You will see medieval traditions revived - donkeys turning threshing wheels and demonstrations of farm equipment. All these, combined with free food tasting of Mallorcan cheese, wine, sausages, pa amb oli*, sopes mallorquines** and oven baked Coca***, transforms La Granja into a living museum. The grounds of La Granja are wonderful for a leisurely stroll and features beautifully groomed gardens, fountains, ponds, waterfalls and a thousand-year-old yew. There is also a spring that sprouts water 30 feet up into the air. Pa amb oli - Country bread (made with brown flour and no salt) sprinkled with salt and olive oil - if first rubbed with tomato it becomes Pa amb Tomaquet Sopes Mallorquines - Winter dish. A 'soup' made with vegetables and maybe some meat served on bread in a bowl. The bread soaks up most of the juice making a delicious stodgy meal. Coca - Mallorcan 'pizza'. A thin pastry base topped with either red peppers or maybe spinach with raisins and pine nuts, or onions.
