Surrounded by Bellver Wood, the largest green area in Palma de Mallorca, Bellver castle stands majestically at 112 metres over the bay of Palma. True to its name (Bellver means “lovely view” in ancient Catalan), Bellver Castle affords visitors a spectacular vista of Palma and its surrounding areas.
Bellver Castle was originally built as a luxurious castle for King James II in the 14th century, but was turned into a military prison in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the inquisition, it was later used in the 1930's by dictator Franco to imprison insurgents during the Spanish civil war. Sadly, throughout its history, Bellver Castle has been utilised more for imprisonment and defence purposes than as a residence for royals. Today Bellver Castle is one of the most visited sites on Mallorca and provides a fantastic opportunity for visitors to examine Palma's history through artifacts and beautiful pottery. Only 3 km from the center of Palma, Bellver Castle is one of the very few castles in Europe with a circular design. For those not wishing to contend with the climb up to the castle, public transportation is available. Buses the 3, 4, 20, 21 and 22 buses ferry visitors to within a few hundred metres of the entrance.
